US Secret Service Reveals Crypto Holdings, Blockchain Fascination and NFT Collection in Reddit AMA
The US Secret Service has revealed that it is “definitely a holder of crypto”, that it has a collection of non-fungible tokens (NFT), and claimed that crypto has made it easier than before to trace flows of illicit money.
Representatives from the Secret Service’s San Francisco-area offices responded to audience questions during an AMA (ask me anything) session on Reddit on Monday that they have a deep fascination with cryptocurrencies and the possibilities that blockchain technology enables.
The Secret Service, which in addition to protecting key political leaders is responsible for investigating certain financial crimes, said their job today “often involves the world of cryptocurrency.”
In particular, the agents of the AMA said that a “vast majority” of the reports they receive in their office involve crypto in some way.
Announced by the Secret Service in advance, the AMA was reportedly aimed at educating crypto enthusiasts about recent crimes and providing them with valuable insight on how to avoid becoming victims.
The AMA was jointly hosted by the San Francisco Secret Service chapter and REACT, the agency’s San Francisco-based Regional Enforcement Allied Computer Team.
Crypto is an ‘amazing opportunity’
Perhaps surprisingly, the Secret Service agents also said they see the shift from cash to crypto among criminals as a “fantastic opportunity” for them to better track the movement of illicit funds.
When asked about the difference between illegal crypto and fiat transactions, the agents again indicated that crypto makes their job easier because “transactions are irreversible and immutable.”
Those looking to cover their tracks should opt for cash transactions instead of crypto, the agents said in response to another question.
The agents also referred to themselves as crypto “enthusiasts” in other responses.
They further made it clear that they are happy to share what they know, saying that they are eager to learn from the crypto community.
Finally, the Secret Service agents who answered questions said they want to expand the team of crypto experts and encouraged those with an interest in the field to apply.
“Want to put your passion for cryptocurrency or cybersecurity to good use? We’re looking to hire 450 special agents this year,” they wrote, asking those interested to visit their website for more information.
