press release
Gilberto ‘Zurdo de Oro’ (Golden Southpaw) Ramírez, with Bitcoin.com in his corner, has a shot at the World Boxing Association (WBA) light heavyweight title when he faces Dmitry Bivol, also undefeated. In what is being hailed as the biggest fight of the year, Ramirez vs Bivol is the main event of a DAZN card broadcast live from the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on November 5.
Gilberto Ramírez, the 31-year-old former WBO super middleweight champion with five title defenses at 168 pounds in his impressive 43-0 career, has knocked out his last five opponents.
Gilberto meets current world champion Dmitry Bivol, also 31 years old. The Kyrgyz-born Russian, with a 19-0 record, is riding high after delivering a title defense against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in May in what was billed as a massive upset.
Bookmakers have made Bivol a heavy favorite, giving Ramirez just 21% of the winnings, a prediction Gilberto brushes off. “The odds mean nothing. I’ve been preparing for this fight for years and I know what I’m capable of. I too have been calling for this fight for years and even sent a contract last year. But this time he has nowhere to run or hide. On November 5, I will be the new champion in the light heavyweight division, he said.
Bitcoin.com has proudly sponsored Gilberto’s journey to the top of the light heavyweight division. Ahead of his win against Yunieski Gonzalez in December, the global crypto company set up Zurdo with a Bitcoin.com wallet where he could buy, sell and securely hold cryptocurrencies.
Since then, Gilberto has gone further down the crypto rabbit hole. “Bitcoin empowers ordinary people to take control of their money,” he said. “With the Bitcoin.com wallet, I can send and receive crypto globally in seconds with virtually zero fees. I can also invest in a huge variety of cryptos, all without having to provide my ID. It’s financial freedom and I love the.”
In Gilberto’s native Mexico, where a record $51.6 billion in remittances were sent in 2021 (representing 4% of the country’s GDP), cryptocurrencies have enormous potential to reduce the associated fees. According to a June 2022 report from the World Bank, money transfer fees currently average 6% of the amount sent.
Bitcoin.com CEO Dennis Jarvis commented: “It’s an honor to support Gilberto on his journey. We also take seriously the chance to reach Gilberto’s passionate supporters with tools and information that we believe can empower them to take advantage of the opportunities which are available in decentralized finance.”
Should Ramírez win on Saturday, he would fight for a fight against fellow Mexican Saul Alvarez in what could be a Cinco de Mayo classic.
Bitcoin.com’s team wishes Gilberto success on the knockout road to continue what is already a remarkable career for a professional boxer in his prime.
