Ukraine joins European Blockchain Partnership as observer – Blockchain Bitcoin News

Ukraine has been granted observer status in the European Blockchain Partnership (EBP). Officials in Kyiv hope the move will facilitate the implementation of blockchain technologies by the Ukrainian government and lead to the adoption of more effective cryptocurrencies.

Ukraine is moving towards membership of the European Blockchain Partnership

Ukraine has been accepted as an observer in the European Blockchain Partnership (EBP), an initiative to develop an EU blockchain strategy and build blockchain infrastructure for public services. Observer status is a step towards full membership, for which Ukrainian officials and members of the crypto community have been lobbying.

The pressure for the country’s accession to the EBP was initiated by Oleksii Zhmerenetskyi, chairman of the Blockchain4Ukraine Interfractional Association of Ukrainian Lawmakers, and Konstantin Yarmolenko, who heads the NGO Virtual Assets of Ukraine.

In March this year, they sent a letter to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other EU representatives urging them to establish a common European blockchain infrastructure based on EBP.

In response to their request, the head of the executive branch in Brussels confirmed the prospects for Ukraine’s accession as an observer. The country is now the third non-EU nation to participate in the initiative, apart from Norway and Liechtenstein.

“Ukraine’s integration into the European Blockchain Partnership will strengthen the joint work on the introduction of blockchain technology in public registers and services,” said Alexander Bornyakov, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister for Digital Transformation.

Bornyakov, who represents the Eastern European nation in EBP, recently attended an online meeting with all members. He added that accession would also promote “a very effective regulatory environment, including for the virtual asset market” in the country.

According to the head of Blockchain4Ukraine, Zhmerenetskyi, by joining the blockchain partnership, Ukraine will be in a better position to push for the recognition of its higher education diplomas and driver’s licenses for millions of Ukrainian refugees in Europe.
