Sustainable Blockchain Summit EU encourages society to drive decarbonisation through Web3
The two-day event saw a global panel of technology experts discuss how blockchain will transform renewable energy and drive long-term sustainability, connecting Web3 and sustainability leaders.
Filecoin, the largest decentralized storage network designed to store humanity’s most important information, concluded the Sustainable Blockchain Summit EU on July 23, concluding two days of keynotes, workshops, breakout sessions and hackathons at Le 28 George V in Paris.
The summit, which was supported by UN Climate Change, provided a platform for experts to meet, debate, analyze and discuss how greener blockchain solutions can be built. Over 350 participants from around the world, including representatives from the UN Climate Change, European Union Blockchain Observatory and Forum, Climate Collective, Gitcoin, HBAR Foundation, Solana, Regen Network and many more joined to drive conversations about blockchain and sustainability going forward.
Following the conclusion of the event, Filecoin Green project manager Alan Ransil said: “After two full days of talks, panels, workshops and hackathons, we are more energized than ever to continue our work to develop Web3-based solutions to drive the transition to renewable energy. Web3 has the ability to drive solutions at a scale previously out of reach through open source problem solving and collaboration. On the heels of SBS 2022, that’s clearer than ever, and we’re proud to help drive this community forwards.”
Highlights from the event include:
- Panel: “The Planet as a Public Good” with Gitcoin Co-Founder Kevin Owocki, Gloria Kimbwala of Gitcoin Customer Success, Protocol Labs Founder and CEO Juan Benet and Filecoin Green Project Manager Alan Ransil.
- Podcast Recording: ReFi with John Ellison and Kevin Owocki.
- Keynote: “Building a sustainable Web3” with digital economist Alex DeVries.
- Keynote: Alex Paris, UN Global Innovation Center for Climate Change.
The event also hosted an active “Tokenized carbon roundtable” with many of the major projects working to create and exchange carbon credits on chain. The event included representatives from Regen Network, Klima DAO, Toucan Protocol, Nori, Gainforest, Open Forest Protocol, Flow Carbon and others who discussed the way forward to make carbon markets more transparent through Web3. Anonymized notes from this session are available on Github.
Concluding the “Planet as a public good” panel, Benet called on the global blockchain community to continue the momentum sparked over the two-day summit. He emphasized the importance of building networks that connect green tech builders to funding sources and talent: “Movements and networks tend to be undervalued as a means of having a massive impact. You can use movement to bring people together in a regular cadence and create a way for everyone to exchange information and continue to develop. Let’s scale the Sustainable Blockchain Summit movement and bring many more people to these sets of talks.”
