Just like last year, Yosuke seems to be revealing a deep interest in Blockchain-based games for 2023.

- Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda published a New Year’s letter, discussing future plans to investors and the community. The open letter places great emphasis on NFTs, Blockchain and the general innovative Web 3.0 technologies.
- 2022 was reportedly a volatile year for Blockchain-based entertainment, and Square Enix remains positive about the contentious market.
- Yosuke is looking to further invest and grow in the polemic industry this year and has big ambitions to develop in Blockchain-based entertainment.
- Square Enix is apparently developing many Blockchain games based on its original IPs, but it will possibly reveal more unannounced Blockchain titles in 2023.
The Square Enix CEO’s New Year’s letter begins by discussing current world events, inflation and the issues facing digital entertainment services and game studios.
Yosuke also elaborates on the studio’s recent history, strategies and subsidiary acquisitions of Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, Square Enix Montréal and their respective IPs with the Embracer Group.
“After the excitement and excitement that surrounded NFTs and the metaverse in 2021, 2022 was a year of great volatility in the blockchain space.”
Yosuke further cites how “blockchain gained significant recognition as a field in 2022.” The letter discusses all the environmental and societal impacts and people’s opinions about Blockchain technologies.
In addition, the multinational company shows a deep interest in innovative Web 3.0 technology. The CEO notes, “we are most focused on blockchain entertainment, to which we have devoted aggressive investment and business development.”
Square Enix wants to work hard to offer good quality Blockchain games going forward. Yosuke iterated, “That is, what kind of new experiences and new excitement our Digital Entertainment business can deliver to our customers through its game development efforts and other endeavors under the self-sustaining, decentralized concept is extremely important.“
Yosuke notes how the significant volatility last year caused a major shift in Blockchain entertainment, and how to take advantage of it.
In the wake of the aforementioned turbulence in the cryptocurrency industry, there is now a trend to see blockchain technology as just a means to an end and discuss what needs to happen to achieve the end of delivering new experiences and excitement to customers. I see this as a very favorable development for future growth in the industry, says the CEO.
Therefore, the CEO hopes to further expand his horizons to develop Blockchain games this year. Square Enix is apparently already in development”several blockchain games based on original IPs, some of which we announced last year, but it seeks to concentrate on brewing even more Blockchain games.
Yosuke further wrote in the New Year’s letter, “we are making preparations that will enable us to unveil even more titles this year.We can expect the announcement of even more Blockchain-based games from Square Enix in 2023.
The CEO will clearly continue to take stakes, increasing investments and the Blockchain-based entertainment business. Yosuke articulates, “We are also engaged in global sourcing from an investment perspective and will continue to take stakes in promising businesses whether we find them in Japan or abroad.“
Furthermore, Yosuke acknowledges the negative attitude towards Blockchain and NFTs-based entertainment, but wants Blockchain games to grow further this year.
“Blockchain has been a subject of excitement and a source of unease, but with that in the rearview mirror, we hope that blockchain gaming will move into a new stage of growth in 2023. […]We will drive our businesses forward with the goal of making 2023 a year of great development and transformation.“
That’s not all; the Japanese multinational will also apparently reveal a “major announcement unrelated to FFXVII” this year. The new year looks set to be jam-packed with games for Square Enix.
