Sotheby’s Relaunches ‘Glitch-ism’ NFT Auction as ‘Glitch: Beyond Binary’

Sotheby’s Takes Step Towards Diversity in ‘Glitch: Beyond Binary’ NFT Auction
The upcoming art auction “Glitch: Beyond Binary” is a new iteration of last month’s “Glitch-ism” auction. It is noteworthy that Sotheby’s focuses on diversity and inclusion among the featured NFT artists.
First, let’s revisit what actually happened with Sotheby’s original NFT auction. Renowned auction house Sotheby’s canceled its NFT auction “Natively Digital: Glitch-ism” after artist Patrick Amadon withdrew. Essentially, Amadon criticized the event for not including female artists and called for more inclusiveness. Amadon’s decision to withdraw his work from Sotheby’s “Glitch-ism” NFT auction highlighted the critical importance of inclusion and representation in the art world. Fortunately, Sotheby’s listened and the auction was canceled with a view to starting over with several different Glitch NFT artists.
Therefore, Sotheby’s announced “Glitch: Beyond Binary.” Alongside this, Sotheby’s emphasized that the community of artists engaging in glitch art includes individuals from diverse backgrounds. Markedly, they added that the community of Glitch artists “does not just identify as male or female, but is made up of people of all gender identities and expressions, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, language, neuro-type, size, ability, class, religion , culture, subculture, political opinion, age, skill level, profession and background.”
Additionally, to correct past mistakes, Sotheby’s has enlisted the help of Dina Chang and Dawnia Darkstone to help select artists for their upcoming launch. The upcoming “Glitch: Beyond Binary” auction by Sotheby’s will feature 34 unique NFTs. Bidding opens on 19 April at 2 p.m. ET.
What is Glitch Art?
Glitch art is a type of digital art that uses visual elements of digital or analog errors, such as distorted images, pixelation, and other errors caused by technological errors. Artists create glitch art by intentionally manipulating or disrupting digital files. This results in unique and abstract works of art. In recent years, glitch art has gained popularity, and many associate it with underground electronic music and other digital subcultures. People often see glitch art as a means to push creative boundaries and experiment with the limits of technology.
Ahead of the Sotheby’s NFT auction, they noted that Glitch artists use their art as forms of “political and identity expression.” They added “an MP3 may skip or crackle, a preview window may briefly display shards instead of an image, and a website may hiccup when loading and distort its content. While these events are rarely anticipated and usually unwelcome, glitch artists can actually provoke them on purpose.”
