Saturday Night Live Cold Open Parodies Donald Trump’s $99 NFT Announcement

Saturday Night Live is known for parodying news events. As noted by The Hollywood Reporter during their December 17 episode, SNL the cast decided to use the cold open to fake Donald Trump’s last announcement. During the former president’s announcement earlier this week, Trump stated that he would be selling NFTs or, as he called them, “Trump Digital Trading Cards.” In his video announcement, the ex-president described his NFTs (which reportedly sold out on the first day) as “about my life and career.” The NFTs portray Trump as an astronaut, cowboy, race car driver and superhero.

IN SNL cold open, James Austin Johnson’s Trump began the sketch by addressing the news before citing the video itself. “This is Donald Trump, hopefully, your favorite president of all time, better than Lincoln, better than Washington,” Johnson stated as Trump before adding, “honestly, better than Ezra.”

Johnson’s Trump continued, “You may have seen this week, I made a big announcement, that I’m doing my first official collection of Donald J. Trump Digital Trading Cards — or to use the technical term, ‘nifties’ … because they is so pretty,” the comedian stated that he mispronounced NFTs. “Trump cards are $99 each. Seems like a lot, seems like a scam, and in many ways it is,” he said. “You can also get them for free by going online and looking at it.”

Johnson additionally said, “You get me like a cowboy or me melting Biden’s ice cream with my big laser eyes.” This statement refers to the opening of the real former president’s video, which showed Trump portrayed as a superhero with laser beams coming out of his eyes.

SNL then proceeded to mock the NFT cards by showing the former president various humorous situations such as the famous bullet-dodging scene in The matrixTrump does the divisive thing, even portraying the former president as Jessica Rabbit Who Framed Roger Rabbit. “Wow, look at her legs,” he said. “Maybe I would be with her if she wasn’t me.”

Johnson’s Trump went on to call his son, Donald Trump Jr., his “third least embarrassing child.” The Fake Trump Jr. (played by Mikey Day) then promoted Trump’s new NFTs along with a new Christmas CD by his fiancée, Kimberly Guilfoyle (played by Cecily Strong). Strong’s Guilfoyle declared that the album was called NOW that’s what nobody calls music before breaking into the lyrics of “Silent Night, Holy Night”, which were naturally off-key.

Da Day’s Trump Jr. and Strong’s Guilfoyle left the stage as Johnson’s Trump stated, “There they go. What a terrible couple.”

The sketch ended with Trump sharing his Christmas saying, “Merry Christmas, OK? We all say ‘Merry Christmas’ again, right? I took that back. Because Christmas is very important to Christians, and to Jews, I think, also.”
