Earlier this week, RTFKT COO Nikhil Gopalani lost over $300,000 worth of NFTs in a phishing hack. The NFT project manager took to Twitter to announce the devastating news. The attack has affected almost his entire digital asset portfolio, including grail NFTs and more. Read on to learn more about the incident below.
Due to the phishing attack on CloneX COO, Nikhil Gopalani’s wallet only contains a single NFT at the time of writing. NFT is Death Row Records CloneX Theme Song NFT. The digital artifact is worth $59. The tweet he sent out to announce the hack mentions that the clever scammer has the same phone number as his Apple ID. Also, the hacker has sold all of Nikhil’s CloneX NFTs.
Upon further investigation, it was found that the hacker used two wallets to steal all of CloneX COO’s NFTs. This was taken from OpenSea trading data from the original wallet. The NFTs are worth a total of over $173,000, given current floor prices. The valuable portfolio includes 19 CloneX NFTs, with a current estimated value of around $140,000. Furthermore, there are 18 RTKFT Space Pods (worth over $6,300), 17 Loot Pods worth over $6,200, 11 CryptoKicks worth over $3,000, and 19 Animus Eggs worth over $20,000, among many others.
This is a truly catastrophic phishing hack during the raging crypto winter, and we believe that the culprits must be brought to justice as soon as possible. Another striking detail was that a rare NFT, the highly sought-after Murakami Clone #17088, was also part of the stolen collection. This NFT is an acclaimed piece in RTFKT’s collaboration with prolific Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. The digital collectible remains Nikhil Gopalani’s Twitter (@Nikgopalani) PFP. At the time of writing, no further details about the hack have been released.
Although RTFKT CTO Samuel Cardillo posted comments during the hack announcement Twitter thread by Nikhil. “For legal purposes, we won’t be able to go into deeper details until further notice. All I can say is: Be aware that companies like Microsoft and Apple will never ask you for your password, private key, or other forms of private information over the phone or email, he says. This could indicate that Nikhil accidentally gave the hacker confidential information. Furthermore, the tweet would also say that the scammer may have assumed the identity of a top tech employee. This is just speculation on top of the limited information which has come out No further information is available at this time.
