Research Fellow, NLP for Fintech Compliance job at QUEENS UNIVERSITY BELFAST

Job description

The School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (EEECS) at Queen’s University Belfast is seeking a highly productive, ambitious and collaborative member of the Advanced Research and Engineering Center in Northern Ireland. The center combines expertise from PwC, the University of Ulster and Queen’s University Belfast.

The fellow will join this vibrant network of collaborators who help plan and deliver the research activity specifically to develop experiments and prototypes at the border of artificial intelligence and natural language processing (NLP) research. They will lead the development of NLP methods for modeling unstructured text that document commercial compliance data and conform to specifications developed in collaboration with PwC, and they will evaluate the models in the context of auditing the text data (ie assess data compliance) and examine the usefulness of the models for to automate complex compliance processes.

The position is a critical role, and as such successful applicants will have responsibility for independent research, planning, outreach and collaboration both internally and externally.

The position is available on a fixed-term contract for 3 years.

The successful candidate must have, and your application must clearly demonstrate that you have:

  • 2.1 Honors Degree (or equivalent) in applied mathematics, computer science, electronics, electrical engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Have or are in the process of getting a doctorate in computer science, applied mathematics, electronics, electrical engineering, physics

Relevant experience includes:

  • At least 3 years of research experience in at least one of: intelligent systems, artificial intelligence, development of algorithms.
  • 1-3+ years of experience developing deep learning and/or NLP systems
  • Work effectively as part of a research team in the development and promotion of research topics

Demonstrable knowledge of Python, and experience with Java, R, C# or other relevant languages. Knowledge of deep learning or NLP frameworks and tools (eg PyTorch, huggingface, spaCy).

Demonstrable knowledge of typical algorithms and concepts used in machine learning and deep learning, to include both model architectures and model evaluation.

Fixed-term contract positions are available for the stated period initially, but in special cases may be renewed or made permanent depending on available funding.
