The NFT market has found itself in a bit of a pickle lately. After the sharp increase in 2021, sales of NFTs have since leveled off and may actually be in a slight decline, although it has not stopped people like GameStop from entering space with its own NFT marketplace. In even more bizarre news, a Web 3 company known as Polium introduced “the world’s first” NFT console, which made us question the direction of human development.

Despite the ongoing popularity of NFTs in certain communities, it is clear that more and more people are coming out of the woodwork to condemn the concept altogether. At the recent International Games Festival in Brazil, a developer actually managed to give an entire lecture on why NFTs are “a nightmare”, despite the fact that the event was sponsored by a number of NFT and blockchain companies.

Known for his work on the tactical role-playing game Chroma Squad, developer Mark Venturelli initially started his lecture by marking it as “The Future of Game Design”, but surprised the audience in part when he effectively crossed out the title in the slideshow and replaced it with “Why NFTs Are a Nightmare “. The lecture itself was uploaded to YouTube and his slides have been kindly translated into English so you can read them.

What is particularly interesting is that despite the many sponsorships from NFT-related companies, the event organizers cleared the content of the lecture before the presentation, so that Venturelli could give his statement without interruption. In a statement to PCGamer after the event, Venturelli said that the sponsors were understandably not happy with the talk:

“I have heard that the sponsors were very angry. They tried to break into the conversation while I was talking, but the organization would not let them. It does not surprise me, because the organization did not do so at one point. Censored me, they stopped me from to put what I wanted on the slides. I gave them access to the slides before the speech. There was never any intention on their part to shut me up or anything like that. “

In a further sharp attack on the event’s sponsors, Venturelli stated that NFT companies are essentially irrelevant and need to buy into any influential space:

“These people are outsiders here, they are not important. They are just trying to buy their relevance, because they have no real influence over the future of our industry. If you just give them this place undisputed, you just give them exactly what they want. , and buy their story that they are relevant. “

This is not the first time the concept of NFTs has been the subject of serious criticism. Earlier this year, the British publisher Team17 went back on its own plans to launch ‘MetaWorms’ NFTs after an overwhelming negative response from both consumers and developers. In the same way, the Sonic publisher SEGA has indicated that it can also take a step back from the NFT area.

What do you think of Venturelli’s talk about NFTs? Do you think the concept is on its way to dodo? Let us know in a comment!
