NFT World, cut off by Minecraft, says it will build its own Minecraft with Blockchain and creators
Well, when you’ve based your entire ecosystem around a specific game and that game says they want nothing to do with you, it throws a wrench in things. That is exactly what happened last week when Minecraft and Microsoft announced that third parties would not be able to use the Minecraft ecosystem for web3/crypto/blockchain/NFT based projects.
The problem is? Many of these were already in the works, including some massive enterprises like NFT World, which already had millions pouring in on the basis that it would exist in Minecraft. Now that can no longer happen, and the game’s response is…ambitious, to say the least.
In a lengthy statement claiming that this is a battle over web2 trying to fend off web3 “innovation,” the solution to the current problem, a Minecraft-based world without Minecraft, appears to be that NFT World says it can build its own Minecraft. No, actually:
“We are creating a new game and platform based on many of the core mechanics of Minecraft, but with the modernization and active development, Minecraft has been gone for years. This is not a rewrite of an open source Minecraft clone, which is likely to violate the EULA or still risking legal action, this is completely from the ground up.This transition will also come with a publicly directed brand identity change that is more player-friendly.
While the gameplay, look and feel of this will be very familiar to Minecraft players; The game mechanics, graphics, performance optimizations and general improvements will usher in a more accessible, unique and enjoyable gaming experience. Best of all, we will be completely freed from the policies Microsoft and Mojang have over Minecraft. We really become our own open game and platform.”
Ok, so this will have Minecraft’s “core mechanics” and “playstyle, look and feel”, but be legally different enough from Minecraft so they won’t get sued? This is sort of a “my legally questionable Minecraft clone raises questions already answered by my legally questionable Minecraft clone” situation to begin with here, overlooking, of course, the colossal task it would be to create something similar Minecraft basically. Pretending this is possible, I wonder what kind of timeline developing such a game would have and how patient people in the rapidly changing crypto world would be waiting for them to come up with something. It seems ambitious to the point of nonsense, given what they promise here.
For now, they recommend that NFT World fans continue to create worlds within Minecraft, but don’t try to monetize them or anything, given these new rules, and just wait until NFT Worlds’ Not-Minecraft is out, as one of the features will be backwards compatibility where Minecraft stuff will be able to be ported directly into it. Of course, unless Microsoft steps in to block it as well.
Even if you’re a die-hard NFT person, this project seems more doomed than most, given the decree from Microsoft here and the apparent absurdity of NFT World trying to just “make its own Minecraft” as a response. Good luck, you need it.
