NFT NEWS: Trial of Jimmy The Monkey is coming for Christmas

The trial of Jimmy The Monkey is coming up for Christmas, according to a tweet from the Bored Ape Yacht Club on Thursday afternoon.

The cryptic tweet contains only an image of what appears to be a jewelry box, presumably locked and grasped by Jimmy The Monkey’s hands. Depicted on both sides of the lock appear to be hieroglyph-like battle scenes.

The tweet has only fueled further speculation about exactly what Jimmy The Monkey’s trial will entail. The plot point was originally unveiled when the Bored Ape Yacht Club unveiled its “Roadmap 2.0” in September 2021.

The road map shows Jimmy handcuffed and pinned in place with a placard nearby that reads “The Trial of Jimmy The Monkey (MD vs. MMI: The Prologue).”

Yuga Labs has yet to reveal the exact meaning of “MD vs. MMI” either, but many are speculating that it relates to a competition or battle between two camps, probably in a game. That speculation would collapse in time with the recent hiring of Yuga Labs’ first Chief Gaming Officer, Spencer Tucker.

The initial response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with many replies to the tweet expressing unbridled excitement.

Since the project’s inception, Jimmy The Monkey has quietly played a small role in the Bored Ape Yacht Club ecosystem, but no formal origin story or history has been shared. Instead, Jimmy has been kept in the background, playing a less mischievous role in some early Yuga Labs tasks.

Despite expectations of a quiet day in the NFTs thanks to the American holiday, the news has led to a big increase in volume for the Bored Ape Kennel Club in particular.

The first BAYC companion is up more than 13% on the day to 5.1 ETH, having traded nearly 1000 ETH on OpenSea alone in the last 24 hours. This volume also includes a strange 20 ETH golden BAKC sale that took place almost four hours before the official announcement. The new owner added another BAKC for 4.98 ETH, but otherwise had no activity on OpenSea for more than seven months.
