NFT, BTC scam reported on the British Army’s compromised Twitter, YouTube accounts

The British Army’s Twitter and YouTube accounts were simultaneously hacked on Sunday and used to promote two different crypto scams.

On Sunday night, however, the compromised accounts were restored to normal, media reports said.

Cyber ​​attack

The unknown hackers changed the account details to make them look synchronized with the crypto scams they promoted through them.

The British Government’s Department of Defense acknowledged the breach of the British Army’s Twitter and YouTube accounts in a chirping.

“We are aware of a breach of the Army’s Twitter and YouTube accounts, and an investigation is underway. The military takes information security extremely seriously and solves the problem. Until their investigation is completed, it will be inappropriate to comment further, it is said.

Accounts restored

After about two hours, the hacked Twitter accounts were partially restored. Many of the retweets made during the compromised status of the account continued to be on the restored page, reports claimed.

The British Army apologized to its followers for the inconvenience through a tweet from the restored account.

“Sorry for the temporary interruption in our feed. We will conduct a full investigation and learn from this incident. Thank you for following us, and normal service will now resume “, it tweeted about two hours after the British Ministry of Defense acknowledged the breach.

NFT, BTC scams

The hacked Twitter account with 362,000 followers announced a new NFT collection called The Possessed. According to a copy of archived hacked account, the attackers outlined two different sets of NFTs – Anomaly and Moonbirds. The announcement was linked to a fake coin website, which seemed genuine and up to date, and even showed that the number of available NFTs is declining.

“At one point, the Twitter account name was changed to Bapesclan, accompanied by a profile picture of a monkey-like cartoon character with makeup that mimics a clown,” the BBC said in its report.

The hackers exchanged the account information for the YouTube channel with that of ARK Investment. Through the compromised channel, the attackers showed interviews of Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey, with a scam BTC and ETH scam reported on the borders.

Asked about hacking and theft

While incidents of hacking and theft have increased significantly in recent months in the cryptocurrency area, compromising social media accounts are also reported to high-profile individuals and organizations quite often.

For example, in December 2021, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Twitter account was briefly compromised, showing reports of a bitcoin scam.

Digital artist Mike Winkelmann or Beeple is another high-profile person whose Twitter account was recently broken. The hackers were able to extract $ 71,000 from users through a crypto fraud link.
