Microsoft owned Minecraft junks Blockchain-based NFTs on its platform

  • Microsoft owned Sandbox game Minecraft banned NFTs from their platform claiming NFTs create inequality.
  • Blockchain technologies will not be allowed to be integrated into Minecraft’s client and server applications.
  • NFTs were sold at artificially or fraudulently inflated prices, Minecraft claimed.

The popular Microsoft-owned game Minecraft has announced that it does not support non-fungible tokens (NFT), sending a shock to the Blockchain developer community.

An NFT is a unique, non-editable digital token that is part of a blockchain and often purchased with cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.

An NFT can be associated with any type of digital asset, such as an MPEG or a GIFbut the most common use today is digital art such as JPEGs.

“NFTs do not include our entire community and create a scenario of haves and have-nots,” Minecraft said in a statement late Wednesday.

“The speculative pricing and investment mentality around NFTs takes the focus away from playing the game and encourages profit-making, which we believe is inconsistent with the long-term enjoyment and success of our players,” the company added.

To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, Blockchain technologies will not be allowed to be integrated into Minecraft’s client and server applications.

“Also, in-game Minecraft content such as worlds, skins, persona elements or other mods cannot be used by Blockchain technology to create a scarce digital resource,” the company announced.

The company further said that NFTs and other Blockchain technologies create digital ownership based on scarcity and exclusion, which is inconsistent with the values of creative inclusion and playing together.

“We are also concerned that some third-party NFTs may not be reliable and may end up costing players who purchase them. Some third-party NFT implementations also rely entirely on Blockchain technology and may require an asset manager that may disappear without warning,” Minecraft warned.

There have also been cases where NFTs were sold at artificially or fraudulently inflated prices.

“We have no plans to implement blockchain technology in Minecraft right now,” it added.
