Background on Organizers: Founded in 1961, Accion is a US-based non-profit organization that seeks to alleviate poverty by providing services such as micro-enterprise loans and business training. During 2021, the NGO worked with partner organizations in dozens of countries that together had savings from 11 million people and small businesses, issued 8 million loans and underwrote 6 million insurance policies. Accion invests through entities including Accion Frontier Investments, Accion Global Investments and Accion Venture Lab; and it conducts research via the Center for Financial Inclusion.
Accion created the Accion Venture Lab in 2011 to serve as its “seed-stage investment arm.” The mission of the investment vehicle is to support “technology and [other] new approaches that help underserved people and small businesses benefit from the world’s formal economy.” As of 2022, Accion Venture Lab has 54 invested companies, most of which are in the microfinance and fintech sectors.
The Dutch development bank Financierings-Maatschappij voor Ontwikkelingslanden (FMO) was established in 1970 and is owned 51 percent by the Dutch government and 49 percent by private investors. The institution works towards the UN’s sustainability goals by financing capacity development and placing debt and equity investments in sectors such as agriculture, financial institutions and energy. As of December 2021, FMO reports a total committed portfolio of EUR 9.7 billion (USD 10.2 billion), having posted a net profit of EUR 491 million (USD 518 million) during that year.
Cost: Entry cost is EUR 259 (USD 259) if purchased during September and EUR 311 (USD 311) thereafter.
