The Mekong Club, a Hong Kong-based non-profit organization, is launching an NFT fundraiser to raise global awareness of modern slavery. Created in collaboration with NMKR, this is Hong Kong’s first nonprofit-run NFT fundraiser. Organized as part of the Mekong Club’s 10th anniversary, the fundraiser reflects the club’s vision of a slave-free world. Essentially, the non-profit organization hopes for a world where businesses take a step towards achieving social sustainability.
Initially, Matt Friedman, The Mekong Club’s CEO, hosted a session that brought together designers from across countries and diverse cultural backgrounds. Using NFTs, the volunteer designers were tasked with designing a world without slavery. Later, on November 29, The Mekong Club will auction the NFTs. In particular, the day marks #CryptoGivingTuesday, a global crypto fundraising campaign for non-profit organizations.
Furthermore, The Mekong Club also works with its annual Sweatshop Challenge. The event encourages companies, schools and the public to experience a “sweatshop situation”. Through the initiative, the non-profit organization tries to raise awareness of modern slavery, human trafficking and forced labour.
“Unfortunately, among all non-profit organizations globally working on this problem and the United Nations combined, less than a quarter of one percent of the profits generated from criminal activity are used to fight modern slavery,” Friedman said. “We hope that through this year’s fundraising activities we can create a global awareness of the issue so that we can collectively put an end to modern slavery.”
Founded in 2012, The Mekong Club works with the private sector to adopt sustainable practices against modern slavery globally. The non-profit organization works closely with small, medium-sized and multinational brands to share best practices and practical recommendations. The club is also the recipient of three international awards, the Stop Slavery Innovation Award, the Asia Gold Award and USAID’s Evidence2Action Award.
The NFT fundraiser is the Mekong Club’s latest initiative to fulfill its mission to raise global awareness of modern slavery. You can find out more about the initiative on the club’s website.
