Lil Yachty has agreed to settle a lawsuit against an NFT seller who allegedly used his name and likeness to make millions of dollars.
In accordance Rolling stonethe lawsuit – originally filed against NFT platform Opulous in January 2023 for “trademark infringement” – was settled on Tuesday (April 11).
Despite not disclosing the exact terms of the settlement, the parties were given 45 days to “confirm the settlement in writing and file a dismissal of the action.”
Court documents obtained by RS read: “Of course, it is axiomatic that in order to offer ownership of any musician’s copyrighted work, the defendant, Opulous, must first have the agreement and consent of the relevant musician to sell the copyright to his or her work, with the musician in turn entitled to a share of the income from the sale of it.”
According to the Georgia native’s lawsuit filed earlier this year, Opulous is accused of using his brand and name without permission to advertise their “Lil Yachty NFT Collection.”
The rapper learned that Opulous had apparently raised around $6.5 million after releasing “exclusive launch content,” but despite Opulous’s success, Yachty didn’t make a dime of the profits. It has been reported that Yachty only had conference calls with Opulous’ founder Lee James Parsons.
Yet these conversations reportedly did not mention a deal or agreement. Nevertheless, the NFT company apparently used the rapper’s photos for marketing purposes.
In other Lil Yatchy news, the rapper recently made his long-awaited musical debut on Saturday Night Live and performed a couple of songs from his latest album on the late-night sketch show.
Earlier this month, the 25-year-old rapper – along with singer-songwriter Diana Gordon – performed the tracks “drive ME crazy!” and “the BLACK seminole” – two songs from his fifth studio album, Let’s start here — during his visit to NBC’s famous 30 Rockefeller Plaza studio in New York.
In his performance for “the BLACK seminole,” Yachty donned a modest outfit as he belted out the classic rock-influenced tune into a pitch-correcting microphone.
“What’s wrong? What’s wrong, mister man/ Your eyes are low/ And you walk with both hands on your head/ His answer, he’s on a clean, clean hill/ Both feet up on the ground/ But his head way, way , road in the sky,” Lil Yachty sang.
For his performance for “drive ME crazy!” Lil Yachty returned to the stage with Gordon in an oversized Eskimo hat, half-off long-sleeved shirt and shorts. Gordon opened the performance with a yodel-like vocal arrangement over the upbeat melody.
Yachty then stepped up to the musical plate and sang his verse in a style reminiscent of the late Prince Be of PM Dawn.
