How to assess a company’s culture

You’ve got the job. You are over the moon. So it’s an absolute no brainer to say yes, right? Not completely. Just because you have a job offer doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider your options. Getting an offer means you ticked all, if not most, of the boxes. That means they want you.

This gives you a good deal of room for negotiations and time to assess whether the company is right for you or not. Because believe it or not, company culture plays a huge role in an employee’s overall happiness in a role and their experience at a company—especially for people of color.

A 2021 survey on diversity in tech (conducted by .tech Domains) found that two-thirds of minority workers have reported experiencing workplace bias. How can you ensure you don’t become a statistic, investing your time and career in a corporate culture that doesn’t align with your values?

Do your research

There can be a lot of misunderstanding around working for well-known international companies. Whether these misconceptions are around employee benefits or work-life balance, it seems that many people on the outside have ideas about working for larger companies without really knowing what it entails.

Professional platform Candor offers insight into what working life is really like at some of the best global technology companies. You can use the tool to get information about company culture, salary scales and best of all, the company benefits.

Glassdoor is a reputable website where current and former employees anonymously review companies. While reviews are obviously subjective, your alarm bells should start ringing if there are multiple negative reviews.

The anonymity of employee reviews gives a better chance of genuine feedback, so it can help form a picture of your potential employer.

Talk to the staff

Nothing beats getting the scoop on a company’s culture than getting it straight from the horse’s mouth. Are you connected to any current employees on LinkedIn? Do you know someone who works there? If there is an opportunity to mingle with a few employees, it can save you a lot of time in the long run. You can ask them how long they have been in their current position, workloads, staff turnover and what they like about working for the brand.

Also look through all employees’ photos: do they look the same? It will give you an idea of whether the company implements diversity and inclusion values in practice. Similarly, you can contact former employees to find out more about what they liked or disliked about a particular job and company culture.

Consider staff turnover

Another way to find out whether a company is right for you or not is to assess staff turnover. Is it tall? If so, ask yourself why the employees are leaving. A high staff turnover can indicate a low level of happiness in a role or company which can also point to undervalued employees.

On the flip side, if there is a history of employees who have been in a role for a long time, it can be an indication of a healthy company culture where employees are quite happy to go to work every morning for a wide variety of reasons.

Trust your gut

A healthy gut instinct will never sway you in the wrong direction. You can do research, talk to past and present employees and even discuss the job offer at length with friends and family. But in the end, it really comes down to how it feels in your core. If you have doubts, but know that the opportunity is too good to pass up, think about how you can improve the culture internally. Maybe you are the change they were looking for.

However, after all your research you find that the company isn’t for you, don’t give up. Your next move is still out there. Here are three open positions that could be right up your street, and you can find a lot more Fintech Futures Job Board:
