Kinkara Kawa Technique or CUOI D’ ORO is one of the art techniques for making leather crafts, which is to tan, coat it with special metal leaves, then make embossed pattern using metal molds, and finally dye it. It is an art of great rarity that was made only for a duration of 300 years from the Italian Renaissance to just before the Napoleonic Revolution.
The technique was imported to Japan in the mid-17th century and continues to flourish there from Meiji (1868~1912) through Taisho (1912~1926). CUOI D’ORO decorated many walls in European palaces that were torn down and sold when they rebuilt and renovated the buildings. Most of them were bought by Japanese people, cut up into small pieces, then made into bags and other small items, and sold as “KINKARAKAWA” (meaning European gold leather).
“KINKARAKAWA” became very popular in Japan. They also found the origin of CUOI D’ORO after 50 years of research and analysis and succeeded in reproducing CUOI D’ORO of the same quality or better.
