Fresh Del Monte Produce: Blockchain Start-up and Fresh Del Monte Team Up, Launch Traceability Brand

Consumers looking to pull back the curtain can now look forward to a future of quickly scanning QR codes to learn about the product journey from farm to cart. Fresh Del Monte has just invested a 39% stake in blockchain-powered food safety and quality tracking technology company, Decapolis, and plans to implement blockchain-enabled traceability in Fresh Del Monte’s business divisions.

“Now, more than ever, consumers are very aware of what goes into their food. With this blockchain technology, they will know exactly what has gone into the product and where it has traveled until the moment it is purchased for consumption. We We are excited to begin rolling out this traceability solution to all Fresh Del Monte products,” Mohammad Abu-Ghazaleh, Chairman and CEO of Fresh Del Monte, said in a press release.

The move marks yet another sector added to the fresh fruit and vegetable company’s expansive, vertically integrated business segments. Fresh Del Monte’s partnership with the Jordanian and UK-based technology startup will include tracking assessments and the development of complete product information logs. The collaboration is planned to begin with Fresh Del Monte’s pineapple operations in Costa Rica.

“We embark on this endeavor with full confidence in our company, our offerings, service and the people we serve. It is sure to be a promising and fruitful venture, a force multiplier for work that has a positive impact on communities, families and the future of healthy lifestyle and technology for good. We remain steadfast in moving towards our vision to become the leading global reference platform for compliance and certification for food retail worldwide,” said Abedalrhman Habashneh, founder and CEO of Decapolis, in the release. To date, Decapolis has successfully developed and deployed this solution in the private and public sector, spanning four continents.

Blockchain tracking

Using QR codes, Decapolis and Fresh Del Monte will capture every step of production, leveraging blockchain’s digital doctor technology to record snapshots throughout the supply chain process. Not only will this empower consumers to know more about the foods purchased, but this blockchain technology will also support food safety and quality assurance traceability and tracking.

Also, once the two companies have mastered the technology, they plan to provide the tool to other food industry companies and organizations, under the Decapolis Food Guard brand.
