Comic-Con guru explains why storytelling is the key component for successful NFT projects

In the latest episode, Comic-Con legend Gareb Shamus discussing how he has used storytelling to build engagement and a “maker world” that grows and strengthens communities.

What started as a newsletter on comics, founding Gareb Shamus’ passion project, eventually became known to the world as a magazine entitled Wizard. According to Shamus, the Wizard was the outlet where he could “create a voice” and share with his friends the things he had discovered that excited him.

Shamus stressed the importance of building elements of commitment and not limiting the creativity of communities to further “unite them around what they love.” More importantly, he explains how building engagement allowed him to reach billions of people around the world in a way that made it “fun to be a fan of culture.”

There’s a natural synergy between comics and non-fungible tokens (NFT), a topic that is discussed in great depth in this week’s episode of NFT Steez, every other week on Twitter Space exploring the intersection of NFT, culture and everything related to Web3.

“We must promote storytelling”

When asked if the role storytelling will play in the Kumite NFT project, Shamus explained that Web3 provides the opportunity for greater participation and engagement where more stories, from several points of view, can be told and expressed. In the launch of Kumite NFT, Shamus describes that it brings the hero’s journey to the possessors and in this way “everyone can be a hero on their journey.”

Regarding the sustainability of an NFT project, Shamus told Kumite that it was important to develop a “game mechanic” from day one. This game mechanic makes it possible for holders to not only participate, but realize that the story is not linear, as society can participate and have an opinion on how the story will develop.

Pondering future trends for Web3

When Shamus was asked about future trends for NFTs, communities and Web3, Shamus went out and suggested that there must be an appearance of a “moral guideline”, but the ultimate goal of exploring these unknown territories of Web3 is to Allow people to “explore their creativity.”

Instead of assuming that the team behind Kumite would take full control of the project’s history, Shamus believes it would be a “mistake”. Instead of choosing where the story should go, proprietors can create and develop the story of their respective characters, because according to Shamus, fans can very well “create better stories” than the team could.

Restricting creativity is like “it always has been,” says Shamus, and Web3 and NFTs have unlocked the means to harness “global creativity”, especially when it comes to storytelling. The most exciting element of unlimited creativity Shamus says is, “you do not know where it’s going,” and therein lies the fun.
