Chimper’s official Twitter account was hacked less than 24 hours ago, with many users already falling victim to the NFT scam. Consequently, the scammers even maintained a room asking people to create NFTs using their malicious links. Their website is probably hacked as well, so you should avoid interaction for now!
“Starting the first chapter of the Chimps with an AirDrop for our loyal Chimps”, said a tweet posted 11 hours ago by Chimpers. Coming from the official Chimpers account, the news seemed legit. Unfortunately, this was just the beginning of the latest scam in the NFT world.
Over the past 24 hours, Chimper’s Twitter account has been spamming the community with posts. The hackers allegedly offered surprise NFT airdrops, asking people to post various links. Also, they hosted a room that tried to hype traders so that they could access their malicious content.
That’s when many NFT traders realized it was a scam.
Of course, users quickly turned to their own Twitter account to warn others about the hack. Unfortunately, the Chimpers scammers posted for more than 7 hours before the account was suspended.
Chimpers is just one example that proves that even the most trusted accounts can be hacked overnight. After all, the Solana network itself was hacked a few months ago, affecting thousands of crypto wallets.
But how can are you staying safe in such uncertain times? First, it is important to store your NFTs correctly. Experts advise everyone to keep their most valuable assets in a cold wallet (hardware) and use hot wallets like MetaMask only for transactions.
Additionally, be sure to triple check each smart contract before engaging in it. Free NFT scams based on malicious smart contracts have been on the rise since 2022, which is why even beginners should analyze every transaction they make.
