Britain elects crypto-friendly prime minister who said the country should embrace blockchain and digital assets
Britain has elected a new Prime Minister whose past comments suggest she is pro-crypto and blockchain technology.
Liz Truss, who represents Britain’s Conservative Party, is expected to take over after current Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s planned resignation on September 6.
In 2018, Liz Truss told her Twitter followers that she was looking to help open up crypto to innovation and free it from overly strict regulations.
“We should welcome cryptocurrencies in a way that doesn’t limit their potential. Free up free enterprise spaces by removing regulations that limit prosperity.”
In a 2020 debate, Truss highlighted her plans to promote blockchain development in the UK.
“We are also looking to rewrite the game of digital commerce, to create a world-leading ecosystem that supports businesses of all sizes across the UK. This could include provisions that facilitate the free flow of data and prevent unjustified data localization claims while maintaining our ability to protect users from harm online. We can ensure that no tariffs are imposed on electronic transfers, creating huge opportunities in areas such as blockchain, driverless cars and quantum technology…
We want to achieve a world-leading data and digital agreement, which guarantees data flows, but also deals with issues like blockchain and artificial intelligence, thus ensuring that we and the US lead the world and are able to share these economic opportunities.”
Truss beat out Rishi Sunak, another crypto-friendly British politician, to land his new role.
