Early Bitcoin exchange and wallet provider Blockchain.com announced on Friday that it will give its millions of customers a free NFT domain, a tool that allows them to use a single human-friendly username like jeff.blockchain instead of the long line of random . characters that make up a wallet address.
The giveaway is performed via Unstoppable Domains, a company that does for Web3 what such as domain services like GoDaddy did for the internet we are familiar with today.
Earlier this year, Blockchain.com announced that they had completed an integration that would allow their customers to link addresses purchased through Unstoppable Domains to their Blockchain.com wallets.
Unstoppable Domains states that they have already assigned over 2 million NFT domains, most of them associated with the suffixes “.crypto”, “.wallet” and “.nft.” The blockchain.com award involves a new suffix – “.blockchain” – which the companies design as the first branded domain name in Web3, although it is likely that most people will look at the .blockchain domain that refers to the common noun instead of London – based company.
“With Unstoppable Domains, users can secure NFT domains that give them full ownership and control over their digital identity, “said Unstoppable Domains in a statement.” They also provide a user-owned, secure and portable Web3 identifier that users can use to log in. and trade with more than 200 apps, wallets, exchanges, marketplaces, games and metavers. “
The “.blockchain” domains, like Unstoppable Domains’ other offerings, are embedded on the Polygon network and registered on the blockchain, and can be traded and resold.
In an interview with Decrypt, Unstoppable Domains Senior Vice President Sandy Carter proclaimed the NFT domains as not only an easier way to enter crypto transaction addresses, but as an important new tool for establishing online identity. Carter says that the domains are related to login information for sites such as Facebook or Google, but that a single name can be used securely across a variety of applications.
Carter also said that Unstoppable Domains is collaborating with other companies to offer NFT domains that bear their names. If practice prevails, it could lead to a future in which consumers interact with large companies through NFT domains such as “.apple” or “.starbucks.”
