Barley Nectar launches world’s first NFT-backed whiskey brand, building interactive global community of tech-savvy connoisseurs
HONG KONG, 22 August 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Barley Nectar is excited to announce the launch of the world’s first NFT-backed whiskey distillery and club, creating a whole new tech-savvy whiskey community. While primarily a whiskey business, Barley Nectar uses blockchain technology and NFTs to deliver unparalleled investment opportunities to this new global community, as the platform facilitates transactions and improves the transparency of trading the wonder drink.
Alistair MacDonald, founder of Barley Nectar, comes from one of the oldest whiskey families in the world. He strives to build a tech-savvy whiskey community with the launch of the world’s first NFT-backed whiskey distillery and club.
The brains behind Barley Nectar belong to one of the oldest whiskey families in the world, who have worked in the industry for almost 200 years. By combining the craftsmanship and heritage involved in the whiskey industry with the technical innovations made possible by blockchain development, Barley Nectar is creating a whiskey brand made by and for its supporters.
Barley Nectar takes members on a journey to create bottles that they want and to build a new distillery from the ground up. Through this interactive relationship, members are empowered to determine the direction of the company and the ultimate product.
“Whiskey has become one of the most profitable alternative assets over the past 20 years. However, challenges remain with the high costs of trading and guarantee of provenance,” said Alistair MacDonaldfounder of Barley Nectar. “By pairing whiskey with NFTs, we are able to significantly reduce the cost of trading and storage. This approach helps ensure provenance as stock, trade and price history is 100% transparent on NFT platforms. Finally technology allows us to engage with and foster a global community. Since our members are ultimately the decision makers in what we bottle and release – this community aspect is extremely important to us.”
The NFT project has been developed by Barley Nectar’s investor, UD, Hong Kong’s pioneer in blockchain and supplier of security solutions. In addition to offering NFT and cryptocurrency solutions, UD also involves the design and execution of the project.
“Using NFTs allows a whole new audience to collect, trade and invest in whisky,” said To Cheung, Chairman of the Board of Foreign Affairs. “This project benefits both the whiskey distillery and the buyers, saving a lot of time and effort on otherwise complicated procedures when buying a cask. For whiskey lovers who are about to start up, this will be a great investment as well as a unique opportunity to have real decision-making input into how the whiskey is made.”
Priced to USD 8000 each, Barley Nectar is releasing 400 “Angel’s Share” memberships. Named after the integrated whiskey making process, the membership provides holders with two main benefits:
- 12 exclusive whiskey bottles along with matching NFTs: Every month for 12 months, ‘Angel’s Share’ holders vote for a different cask of whiskey sourced from some of the most popular distilleries in Scotland to complete and drain. They then receive a redeemable bottle of NFT which entitles them to a physical bottle from each keg. The bottle NFT holder then has the option to either redeem the NFT and drink the bottle, keep it, or switch ownership to someone else.
- A cask of whisky: The Angel’s Share digital tokens come with the rights to a full physical cask of whiskey (200L, approx. 280 bottles) and 10 years of free storage from their own distillery upon completion, access to bespoke tours of Scottish distilleries, and inclusion in their member auction events.
A series of small group whiskey tasting workshops have been held in Hong Kong since the end of July for promotion. Private sales are now taking place until the end of September. Public sale starts from 1 October to 31 December.
