The sports celebrities who have bought NFTs
Following the announcement by Cristiano Ronaldo that he will be launching his own collection of NFTs in partnership with Binance, odds comparison experts Sidelines.io decided to look at the sports celebrities who have bought NFTs and how much they have gained or lost since their purchase.
NFTs are purchased using Ethereum (ETH) and the value of ETH fluctuates, with the price peaking at $4,644 in November 2021, which would be the perfect time to sell as the price is currently at $1,219. The study calculated where much NFT would be worth now if it was sold for the same amount of ETH it was bought for.
Odell Beckham Jr – $2.17 million
Odell Beckham bought Crypto Punk #3365, a pixelated avatar of the 2014 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, in August 2021 to celebrate the Super Bowl victory, paying 888 ETH which is $2.17 million, the value now drops to $914,000, a heavy 50% loss.
Since his purchase, Beckham announced that he also wanted his $750,000 salary in Bitcoin. Which based on the price of Bitcoin means the value of the salary would have dropped to $413,000.
Lost: $1,255,377
Neymar Jr – $580,000
Neymar is one of the biggest names in football and the Brazil international bought Bored Ape #5269, a red monkey wearing a multi-coloured t-shirt that shoots lasers from its eyes, in January this year and joined the list of star athletes who have ventured into the crypto world.
He paid $580,000 but with the recent crashes the value of NFT is now $239,851
Lost: $340,149
Tom Brady – $430,000
Tom Brady has been an ardent supporter of crypto adoption while also being a brand ambassador for the recently collapsed FTX exchange, which could cost him millions due to his involvement.
To make matters worse, his Bored Ape #3667 for which he paid $430,000 in April 2022 would only be worth $168,250 based on current price action, a 60% loss.
Lost: $239,851
Ben Simmons – $253,434
Brooklyn Nets point guard Ben Simmons got heavily into the cryptosphere this year, joining crypto gaming league PerionDAO as a strategic advisor and ambassador, while purchasing several NFTs, including Bored Ape #5164, which features a brown monkey with a yellow hat, this was his first NFT.
However, since the purchase, its value has fallen by 50% based on the price of ETH, from being worth $253,434 to $126,930.
Lost: $126,504
Steph Curry – $178,310
It’s clear word is getting around the NBA as Golden State point guard Steph Curry also entered the crypto market and bought Bored Ape #7990. Like Simmons, Curry has also lost over 50% and his Ape is worth $69,472 if it was sold now for 55 ETH (how much Curry bought it for).
Lost: $108,733
Serena Williams – $177,000
Serena Williams is one of the all-time tennis greats and owner of Crypto Punk #2950, which is a pixelated image of a woman with a white and blue headband.
Bought for $177,000, the current value is $107,528, a loss of 39% which is on the smaller side of this list, but with a net worth of $250 million, Williams is unlikely to miss out on the money.
Lost: $69,472
Shaquille O’Neal – $14,035
Shaquille O’Neal purchased Mutant Ape #14452 in September 2022, but his rise on the blockchain didn’t just stop there. Since starting Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs, he has raised $2 million for charitable foundations through the sale of his unique NFT collection. With a net worth of over $400 million
Lost: $7,963
Conclusion
A spokesperson from Sidelines.io commented: “Crypto and blockchain technology is quickly being integrated into society, and celebrities are adopting it as a way to branch out their brand and in some cases like Shaquille O’Neal do good for others.
The crypto markets have suffered a lot in the last 6 months, and many exchanges, projects and investors have suffered huge losses. Seeing celebrities being used as PR tools by these platforms can be detrimental to many new investors as they may not understand the risks involved.
Although for the industry to succeed, crypto adoption needs to become more mainstream, which these projects are helping to do. It is important to remember to invest carefully and do your research before buying NFTs or cryptocurrencies.”
