Thor: Love and thunder director Taika Waititi posted a childish cartoon as a fake advertisement for the recently released film, and wondered about non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
The filmmaker debuted the film shortly after the premiere of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest Thor film. Waititi scribbled a quick “poster” and uploaded the photo to his Instagram account with the text: “New Thor NFT poster has just dropped. All my profits go to make another poster. #Thorloveandthunder only at the cinema (and on a burnt DVD I ‘) I sell out the back of Ralphs at sunset). “
The NFT culture is no stranger to a light-hearted sting. The cryptocurrency is based on individual digital ownership, such as that of a rare painting or a unique trading card. The confusion surrounding real ownership of a digital image versus just downloading or screenshots it provides fertile ground for a joke, something MCU’s social media has previously exploited. When promoting the Blue-ray release of Spider-Man: No Way HomeThe social media team tweeted an NFT-targeted gif of a confused Peter Parker with the caption “When someone starts talking NFTs.”
Thor’s cryptic crypto
Waititi’s post was much appreciated by fans, many of whom see the picture as an expression of his colorful personality and sense of humor that is also present in his work. His approach to Thor: Ragnarok changed MCU deeply, and leans into a wider dialogue and a distinctive visual style. According to Thor actor Chris Hemsworth, Love and thunder is a step up for the director when it comes to nonsense. “It was Taika at its craziest,” he shared when asked about Waititi’s filmmaking process.
With fans eager to know Thor’s fate after the events of Avengers: Endgame, Love and thunder has received a lot of attention, overtaking Thor: Ragnarok at the box office. In its first weekend, Odinson’s last major film raised $ 143 million, $ 20 million more than its predecessor. At the time of writing, the number has since climbed to $ 302 million.
Love and thunder follows the titular character into a new phase of his life. After bequeathing the throne of New Asgard to Valkyrie and joining the Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor is called back into action with the threat of an attack by Christian Bale’s Gorr the God-Butcher. The titular hero must join forces with some of his oldest allies to defeat his new enemy and find his place in the galaxy.
Thor: Love and thunder is now in theaters.
