So it looks like Nvidia’s long awaited Lovelace GPUs may not be coming anytime soon also later in the year, if current rumors are to be believed. It’s not even necessarily because RTX 4000 is not ready for launch; It has been suggested that the next generation graphics card may come later due to the existing stock of RTX 3000 cards that Nvidia wants to replace before releasing their new GPUs.
The reason for this suspected surplus of today’s GeForce cards is of course the crash in the crypto market, which has led to mass sales of mining GPUs and a general decline in sales for Nvidia. If this is really the case (and there is most speculation right now, then take it with a pinch of salt) then I ask, I pray, I prayer fall you do not buy a GPU until later this year – at least not at full price, ok?
Yes, Amazon Prime Day is about to hit us with a staggering number of deals, and if you see a GPU on sale that you want to snap up, do not let me make you hesitate. In fact, Prime Day may be your best chance to get a great deal the best graphics cards before the RTX 4000 is launched, because Nvidia will be reluctant to drop the price of existing cards before the new generation is out.
However, if you are not getting a GPU at a low price this Prime Day, put your feet up and stop worrying about graphics cards for a while. Existing GPUs will fall in price as soon as the Lovelace cards are launched, so you have a chance to save money or get a powerful new RTX card – even if it means waiting until December.
Meaning: Nvidia delays could give AMD a chance to regain some market share
Nvidia’s RTX cards have been a popular choice among crypto miners, meaning that during the great GPU drought of 2021, they were the most scaled cards, and usually sold well above MSRP. AMD’s Radeon GPUs were not quite as popular for mining, so while they were still overpriced, they returned to the retail price faster than Nvidia’s card did when the chip shortage began to ease.
Of course, this means that AMD is probably not facing the same surplus stock situation as Nvidia right now, at least not of the same order of magnitude. If AMD manages to get its new RNDA 3 GPUs out the door before Nvidia can launch its own next-generation cards, Team Red has a serious chance of securing a larger share of the market before Team Green takes over.
Honestly, I hope it does – the RTX 4000 seems to be seriously impressive, and if I were AMD, I would be worried. AMD has some clever chip design plans for RDNA 3 up its sleeve, but no matter which side launches the new GPUs first, I would still encourage you to be patient and wait until both new generations are available so you do not get the buyer’s conscience.
Oh, and do not buy one ex-mine GPU just because it is very cheap. No, I do not care what NFT shills on Twitter have to say about it; it is not worth the risk. Sure, a card from someone’s little home mining rig will probably not die on you, but a GPU that has sweated the silicon off in a warehouse next to a hundred of its siblings? No thanks.
