Anthony Hopkins NFTs now for sale
You can’t spell Anthony Hopkins without NFT. Well, F is unnecessary… but maybe it is appropriate when we are talking about the unusual new commodity of non-fungible tokens.
The digital art market, famously hailed by Jimmy Fallon and Paris Hilton in this memorable cliphair fell significantly this year, as has cryptocurrency. (The two aren’t necessarily related, but are both secured using blockchain technology.) Still, many big brands are still testing the waters in this new realm. If an IP can make money from a new source, it will find a way. (Get your licensed Hello Kitty NFTs here.)
Although he’s a bit late to the game, 84-year-old two-time Oscar winner Sir Anthony Hopkins must therefore be saluted for throwing his hat into the digital art ring. His NFT collection, “The Eternal,” hit the market on Thursday. Here’s a provocative trailer that doesn’t exactly explain what this is all about, but will scratch the itch if you’ve ever wanted to see the “Hearts in Atlantis” star in a mech suit.
Hopkins mints 1,000 original NFTs, each a variant based on 10 archetypes that display his likeness. The personas have names such as Hero, Jester, Sage, etc. “The Metaverse provides an incredible opportunity to connect with an audience in a completely different way. Taking my art to the next level, with NFT as my canvas, is truly an exciting proposition. “I’m probably the oldest guy in the NFT community and on social media, proving that anything is possible at any age,” the actor said in a press release.
How hands-on Hopkins is with all of this is a bit vague, but the Welsh-born actor has been painting since around 2003. He is self-taught, and while this is all in the eye of the beholder, much of his work is quite good. (You can see some pictures at his website; the work is represented exclusively by a gallery on Maui.)
Hopkins’ last work at his day job, acting as the wise grandfather in James Gray“Armageddon Time,” opens in select cities Oct. 28 with a wide release Nov. 4. He will also appear in “The Son” later this year, a reunion with “The Father” director Florian Zeller.
