Jimmy Kimmel reactions, powerful speeches, “Good Burger” reunion and all the ups and downs of the Emmys
During the 74th Emmy Awards on Monday night, there were many standing ovations for incredible moments like Abbott Elementary star Sheryl Lee Ralph’s incredible speech in which she took a song, and when actress Selma Blair took the stage to present the award for outstanding drama. Series. One person, however, spent part of the night doing the opposite of standing. Jimmy Kimmel was pulled on stage by actor Will Arnett before announcing the winner for Best Writing in a Comedy Series. When Abbott Elementary creator and author Quinta Brunson took the stage to accept her award, she looked down at Kimmel and said “Jimmy, wake up. I won. Jimmy?” Kimmel committed to his act, however, and stayed right at the bottom of the microphone stand throughout her acceptance speech without flinching. Luckily, she didn’t mind it too much as she went on to give her acceptance speech and later told the press backstage: “I don’t know. I know Jimmy Kimmel. The bit didn’t bother me. Honestly, Jimmy gave me my first big tendon night spot, he was one of the first people to see Abbott Elementary. He was the first person to message me on Instagram. He was so excited it was going to be on ABC. I was glad it was Jimmy. He’s one of the godfathers of comedy. I tomorrow I might be angry with him.” However, viewers didn’t love Kimmel’s bit and took to social media with scathing tweets. Of course, the rest of the night’s winners didn’t have to accept their awards with a passed out human at their feet. In fact, the night was filled with some very powerful and emotional speeches. When the Abbott Elementary star took the stage to accept the award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, the first thing out of her mouth were the lyrics to Dianne Reeves’ 1993 song “Endangered Species.” “I’m an endangered species/ But I sing no victim’s song/ I’m a woman, I’m an artist/ And I know where my voice belongs,” said Ralph, who then launched into a powerful speech as she said, “To anyone who ever, ever had a dream and thought your treatment wasn’t, wouldn’t, couldn’t come true, I’m here to tell you that’s what faith looks like, what striving looks like and does you don’t always give up on you, because if you get a quinta Brunson in your corner, if you get a man like mine in your corner, if you get children like me in your corner, and if you have friends like everyone else who voted on me, cheered me on, loved me. Thank you.” Literally everyone there and at home watching was blown away by Ralph’s empowering speech and moment, which was easily the biggest and best highlight of the night. Some even called it “the best Emmy award speech in history.” Rapper Lizzo, who won an Emmy for Outstanding Competition Program for Lizzo’s Watch Out For the Big Grrrls, became emotional on Monday as she shared, “First of all, I’m very emotional and the trophy is nice, but my feelings are for these people on stage with me. The stories they shared, they’re not that unique, they just don’t get the platform to tell stories. Let’s just tell more stories. When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media. A fat as me, black like me, beautiful like me.” Later in the evening, Zendaya won her second Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her incredible performance in Season 2 of Euphoria, eloquently sharing, “My biggest wish for Euphoria was that it could help heal people, and I just want say thank you to everyone who shared their story with me I want you to know that anyone who has loved a Rue, or feels like you are a Rue, I want you to know that I am so grateful for your stories and I carry them with me and carry them with her. Thank you very much.” A few of the winners pointed out how when they first took the stage, they only had 30 seconds to give their acceptance speeches, but when The White Lotus star Jennifer Coolidge accepted the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Television Movie, the veteran actress was rudely cut off by not one, but two walk-off songs. “Hang on. Hang on. Hang on. Hang on. Hang on…okay,” Coolidge said as she finally accepted the interception and hilariously began dancing to the upbeat song, asking her to end it. While most of the evening’s presenters were announced in advance, a few A-listers surprised the audience on Monday night, such as the Queen of Media herself, Oprah Winfrey, who presented the Lead in a Limited Series or TV Movie award to Michael Keaton for Dopesick, previously The Voice judge and music superstar Kelly Clarkson who presented Zendaya with her award, Selma Blair who presented the night’s big award – Outstanding Drama Series to Succession, and former SNL comedian Pete Davidson who made his first major public appearance since his split from Kim Kardashian. Davidson provided a few laughs before presenting the award for Outstanding Comedy Series to Ted Lasso, as he took time to praise his former SNL cast member Kenan Thompson, joking, “This is just like SNL because Kenan does all the work and I refuse to say whatever the writers want.” However, perhaps one of the most exciting surprises of the evening was the Good Burger reunion between Thompson and his co-star Kel Mitchell, likely to promote a possible Good Burger 2 sequel, which Thompson recently teased.
